Are you nervous of the dentist?

Many people avoid regular dental visits because of the stress and anxiety about the procedure. Our practice has specially designed interiors with soothing colour selection, and overhead plasma screens showing relaxing scenes.

While we can assure you that our dentist is highly experienced in treating patients with dental phobias, we can now offer conscious sedation to take away this stress factor.

The type of sedation used in dental practices in UK is called Conscious Sedation. This will lead to a relaxed, dream like state. You will never be completely put off to sleep, and will be able to understand and respond to requests from the dentist.

The drugs that we use here are given into a vein in the hand. We have advanced digital monitoring facility at our practice to keep track of your ECG, Blood Pressure and Oxygen level in your blood. Unlike some other practices where the dentist gives the sedation and then carries out treatment, we have an experienced anaesthetist in-house to administer the sedation and perform the monitoring while the dentist carries out the procedure. Please be aware that deep sedation or general anaesthetic is not used in dental practices in UK.

The effect of these drugs wears off quickly. You may not remember details of the procedure as the sedative drugs used cause amnesia. You will have to stay in the practice for a bit longer till the drug effect is completely gone. There are no long term side effects for these drugs.

There should be an adult accompanying you to take you back home and keep an eye on you for next 24 hours.

We offer this facility to those above 16 years of age, and only to those who are medically fit. We can assure you that the procedure is done safely and professionally at our practice.

Mind the Gap! Do you have missing teeth?

If you’ve lost teeth, either from gum disease or an accident, having a gap in your smile can dent your confidence and prevent you from reaching you full potential….. in work or play.

Olive Dental Care, Exning, Newmarket are able to offer Dental Implants, a long term effective solution to missing teeth.

STEP 1
An initial consultation to check that you have a suitable density of bone and a healthy gum. Simple x-rays when needed are included in the consultation fee. Often, we may need to take panoramic x-ray to obtain a better view of the bones.

If your treatment is complex or you are undoing multi-implant placement, we may need to take full 3D imaging of your mouth.

STEP 2
We start to place the implant. A small gum flap is made and a precise hole drilled. The implant is inserted and the gum sealed. It’s all done under local anaesthetic and it’s entirely pain free.

The implant is left under the gum for six weeks so that healing can occur and the implant knits into your jaw bone and becomes a permanent part of your bone structure.

- If required it is often possible to fit a temporary bridge at this stage –

STEP 3
We attach the abutment. This will form the core of the new prosthetic tooth. The gum is opened up again and the abutment fits easily into the implant structure. Then the gum is left to heal around the protruding structure.

The implant and abutment then form the foundation for the crown that is placed over it. The crown will be custom made ceramic or porcelain so that it can be crafted to the perfect shape and colour to fit with the rest of your smile.

Whatever your demands, we have the know-how, experience and technology to provide you with the very best implant surgery available today.

8 Top Tips to better oral health in the New Year

At Olive Dental Care, preventative dentistry is at the heart of everything that we do. More time spent on hygiene visits and education will mean less time having teeth filled or removed and less cost to you, the patient. Something we’re sure that you will welcome!

Better oral health is increasingly recognised as important to the body as a whole and not just the mouth. So, what are our 8 top tips to help you enjoy better oral health?

  1. Stop smoking. As well as the well known problems in relation to lung cancer and heart disease, smoking is a major contributory factor in oral cancer. It can also cause gum inflammation and leads to gum recession which increases plaque build-up.
  2. Enjoy alcohol in moderation. Alcohol is another contributory factor to oral cancer.
  3. Avoid fizzy drinks and sugary snacks. These lead to a massive increase in plaque which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  4. Try and restrict food intake to mealtimes. Oral bacteria benefit from the constant nourishment that snacking can provide. If you must snack, then try and choose foods like fresh fruit or cheese which are better for your teeth.
  5. Eat a well balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. This will lead to healthier gums and therefore healthier teeth.
  6. Brush your teeth carefully twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. (Children under 7 should only use a pea sized amount of a low fluoride toothpaste).
  7. Floss everyday. Ask us how to if you are not sure – don’t worry – a lot of people don’t know how to do it properly until they are shown!
  8. Visit Olive Dental Care regularly for hygiene appointments.

November is National Mouth Cancer Action Month

Do you know the signs?

About Mouth Cancer

Around 60,000 people in the UK will be diagnosed with mouth cancer over the next 10 years.

American actor Michael Douglas, BBC Broadcaster Danny Baker and ex England and Manchester United Football Captain Bryan Robson have all suffered from mouth cancer.

Tobacco, smoking or chewing it, is still considered the main cause of mouth cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, up to half of current smokers will die of a tobacco-related illness – including mouth cancer.

Drinking to excess can increase the risk of mouth cancer by four times.  Those who smoke and drink are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer.

Mouth cancer is twice more common in men than in women.

People over the age of 40 more likely to be diagnosed, though more young people are now being affected than previously.

Poor diet is linked to a third of all cancer cases. Try to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, even more if possible.

Regular visits to Olive Dental Care, Exning Newmarket will ensure you are professionally screened for signs of mouth cancer. Talk to us about the process and mouth cancer risk factors.

Like many other cancers self-examination is a simple, and potentially life-saving process.

Look out for:

Ulcers which do not heal within three weeks

Red and white patches in the mouth

Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth

If you are concerned about any changes within your mouth make an appointment to visit us as soon as possible.
